چکیده

ABSTRACT We study the population of star-forming clumps in A521-sys1, a $z=1.04$ system gravitationally lensed by foreground ($z=0.25$) cluster Abell 0521. The galaxy presents one complete counter-image with mean magnification $\rm \mu \sim 4$ and wide arc containing two partial images A521-sys1 magnifications reaching $\mu > 20$, allowing investigations down to scales ${\rm R}_{\rm eff} < 50$ pc. identify 18 unique total 45 multiple images. Intrinsic sizes UV magnitudes reveal elevated surface brightnesses comparable similar systems at redshifts $z\gtrsim 1.0$. Such account for ${\sim}40\,\rm{per\ cent}$ luminosity implying significant fraction recent star-formation activity is taking place there. Clump masses range from 106 $10^9\,{\rm M}_\odot$ tens hundreds parsec resulting mass densities 10 $10^3\,{\rm M}_\odot\,{\rm pc}^{-2}$ median ${\sim}10^2\,{\rm pc}^{-2}$. These properties suggest that we detect star formation across scale aggregates giant complexes. find ages less than 100 Myr consistent being observed close their natal region. lack galactocentric trends mass, density, or age old migrated can be explained either dissolution after few ?100 stellar evolution making them fall below detectability limits our data.

Spt 0538−50: Physical Conditions in the Ism of a Strongly Lensed Dusty Star-forming Galaxy at Z=2.8

We present observations of SPT-S J053816−5030.8, a gravitationally-lensed dusty star forming galaxy (DSFG) at z = 2.7817, first discovered at millimeter wavelengths by the South Pole Telescope. SPT 0538−50 is typical of the brightest sources found by wide-field millimeter-wavelength surveys, being lensed by an intervening galaxy at moderate redshift (in this instance, at z = 0.441). We present ...

Metals in Star-Forming Galaxies at High Redshift

The chemical composition of high-redshift galaxies is an important property that gives clues to their past history and future evolution. Measuring abundances in distant galaxies with current techniques is often a challenge, and the canonical metallicity indicators can often not be applied. I discuss currently available metallicity indicators based on stellar and interstellar absorption and emis...

Using galaxy redshift surveys to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars

Gravitationally-lensed quasars can be discovered as a by-product of galaxy redshift surveys. Lenses discovered spectroscopically in this way should require less observational effort per event than those found in dedicated lens surveys. Further, the lens galaxies should be relatively nearby, facilitating a number of detailed observations that are impossible for the more common high-redshift lens...

A survey of the cold molecular gas in gravitationally lensed star - forming galaxies at z > 2

Using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), we conducted a survey of CO J = 1− 0 and J = 2− 1 line emission towards strongly lensed high-redshift dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) previously discovered with the South Pole Telescope (SPT). Our sample comprises 17 sources that had CO-based spectroscopic redshifts obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and ...
